Inspiration Behind the Series?

Never look down the barrel of a gun… period! This angle of view can be jarring, but it inspires a reaction. That’s all it’s intended to do. It’s unsettling maybe to some, but I find firearms to be works of art in their own right and this is simply the less photographed side of a firearm for obvious reasons. I really liked the Artist Robert Longo set of large format graphite and charcoal prints in the 90’s which inspired this series. I’m especially drawn to steel framed handguns with the detail, the lines, the structure…they’re striking. I really like the balance and symmetry. Some more than others of course which may have nothing to do with their performance. There’s just artistry in many firearms.

Capture

Images in the Intimidators series are created using highly specialized medium format cameras that are 100 megapixels tethered to a computer. Capture is made using a layering process to blend the in sharp focal plane from the front to back of the subject. A normal single photograph would result in blurred backgrounds with only a small portion in focus. Lighting is critical and I spend hours on making every detail perfect.

Printing

The images are dye sublimation on metal. This process seemed fitting for the industrial nature of this series. And dye sublimation resists fading more than most other print processes. The interesting thing is they are color photographs but you wouldn’t know it with the natural steel hues. While they are meant to be presented big and bold at almost 5ft high, I do offer a smaller 30 inch set on archival paper. Each series is limited to 100 with 2 artist proofs.

What’s Next?

Four more pairs are in process that will compete the series of ten. They will follow a similar style but be unique in their own right. They’ll be designed in a way where the entire group can easily present together, pairs of two. or even singles.
